“You might want to sit down – I have cancer”
We were at the tail end of our very first wedding season together (it had taken me over a decade to talk Damian into becoming my second shooter), it was a nice day, the sun was shining, the dogs were playing outside, my parents were visiting from Germany, and with one phone call, life as we knew it ended.
The news of Damian’s arthritis being bone cancer hit like a ton of bricks and the rest of the year and early 2020 went by in a blur. I remember frantic phone calls, appointments in Burlington, immediately being transferred to Boston for specialized treatment, chemo, devastating side effects, a Thanksgiving that was just shit, a Christmas that wasn’t much better, Damian spending New Year’s at the hospital, more hospitalizations, failed immune system, more chemo, radiation and finally surgery. Surgery that removed the actual shoulder joints and much, much more. More chemo. Neuropathy, In between, Covid happened.
The 2020 weddings season wasn’t going to happen, at least not for us. I emailed my wedding photographer friends to see who had availability for the dates we were booked for and the Vermont wedding community stepped up big time. By the time I emailed our couples to let them know what was going on, a solid backup plan was in place and there was some comfort knowing that no couple would be left hanging. It felt surreal. Damian was fighting to survive, the business was all but dead, and there was a pandemic raging.
Almost 18 months into this, it’s become apparent that there won’t be a return to normal for us. Damian will never be able to pick up another camera and leaving him to fend for himself at home with me traveling across the Northeast two to three weddings a week isn’t feasible. So with the heaviest of hearts, I’m saying good-bye to weddings. Thank you all for including us in your wedding celebration, for making us feel like part of the family, and for trusting us with your wedding memories! To all the incredible wedding vendors whose paths we’ve crossed – thank you for your support!
I will still be photographing the weddings contracted for in late 2021 but am not accepting any new bookings.
