Vermont weather is unpredictable. We have seen snow as late as June and spring-like temperatures in January. As a Vermont wedding photographer, I’ve photographed outdoor wedding ceremonies on top of mountains, in the middle of a field, and pretty much anywhere in between. Sometimes the nearest place to take cover is super close, other times … not as close as one would like. 🙂
So what can you do when you’ve dreamed of an outdoor wedding but the forecast calls for rain?
- Have a backup ceremony location and be prepared to move indoors (note that most venues will make this call hours before ceremony start time).
- Shorten your ceremony or move the ceremony time if it looks like the rain is not going to stick around. This will depend on how flexible your venue is. Definitely check with them on their “what if it rains” policy.
- Provide umbrellas and go through with it regardless. This depends again on your venue and the adventure readiness of your guests.
Personally, I bring weatherproof camera cases and always have an umbrella if there’s rain in the forecast so if you’re ready to be out in the rain, so am I. I also invested in some cute, clear bubble umbrellas that come in super handy for pictures of the two of you and also for taking family formals outdoors, weather be damned.
